One Health School

The One Health School is designed to provide participants with a real-life experience of unique settings at the wildlife/livestock/human interface. The One Health Warriors raising awareness of rabies and other zoonotic diseases in South Africa

This year the One Health Warriors team from the University of the Free State and the National Health Laboratory Service, Bloemfontein, aim to raise awareness among public health workers and students regarding One Health, specifically zoonotic diseases. We are asking what is One Health and what can you do about it. Therefore, this year we will be distributing pamphlets to a diverse audience, including scientists, doctors and nurses, participating in the 7th Annual Free State Provincial Health Research Day held at the University of the Free State campus on the 8th-9th November 2018.

Neurocysticercosis in children in Eastern Cape

Afrivet and other professionals and students from the medical, veterinary, socio-economic and environmental health sectors to address the issue of Neurocysticercosis, a condition that requently results in epilepsy in people in the rural Eastern Cape of South Africa. This is most certainly a multi-factorial problem, requiring input from all fields. The high infection-rate of the local free-ranging pig populations, lack of proper hygienic toilet facilities in many of the rural schools, poor cooking of meat together have resulted in tapeworm becoming a major human health risk.

Rabies Hyperimmune Plasma Donation Awareness Campaign

Human Rabies immunoglobulin is a scarce resource worldwide, with the number of hyperimmune donors being a limiting factor. Annually, rabies is responsible for 70 000 human deaths across the globe. These deaths are preventable with the correct and timeous administration of post-exposure prophylaxis. The need for hyperimmune rabies plasma donors is currently at its greatest. This One Health initiative aims to raise awareness towards the rabies immunoglobulin donation program with an additional goal of registering new plasma donors.

This plenary discussion on One Health will be held at the 2018 Science Forum South Africa (SFSA2018), annually attended by thousands of delegates from all spheres of life. The informal approach of this event is meant to ignite conversations about science and educates ordinary citizens about pertinent global issues from different fields of science.
