One Health Day 2026: Commemorating 20 Years of Avian Influenza Response in Nigeria

In 2026, Nigeria marks 20 years since its first confirmed outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in 2006. This milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on two decades of progress, lessons learnt and continuing priorities in avian influenza surveillance, research, outbreak response and One Health collaboration. As part of the 2026 International One Health Day commemoration, the OH-Net team will mark this anniversary by reflecting on Nigeria’s avian influenza response, highlighting the importance of collaboration across animal, human and environmental health sectors, and acknowledging contributions to avian influenza surveillance, research and control. The commemoration will celebrate progress while reinforcing the need for sustained multisectoral collaboration, integrated surveillance and preparedness for future emerging infectious disease threats. The event aims to renew commitment to the One Health approach and strengthen collective action to protect animal, human and environmental health in Nigeria.
