Social Media campaign: Rabies in Cape fur seals & warning holiday travellers about high risk rabies areas

As the December holidays approach, the South African public and travelers are warned about rabies in dogs, Cape fur seals and other mammals in South Africa. Rabies is endemic in South Africa and has recently been confirmed in the Cape fur seal population. This virus poses a risk to both animals and humans, as rabies can spread through bites, scratches or contact with infected saliva. As we enter the festive season, let’s ensure that everyone can enjoy the coast safely by staying informed and taking precautionary steps. The rabies social media awareness campaign will kick off on 10 November 2025 and will run until 11 December 2025 (with 8 posts in total). The toolkit was developed through a joint effort with relevant role-players and has been shared with numerous stakeholders. Local Veterinary Services, Health Services, Environmental Services, Nature Conservation, Veterinary Council and Association, municipalities, and others, are working together to raise awareness.
